Homemade powdered laundry detergent

You only need to use 1 tablespoon of this homemade detergent per load, although you can use more for heavily soiled loads

What You'll Need:

  • Super Washing Soda
  • Borax Powder
  • Bar Soap ( Ivory, Fels Neptha, Lever 2000 etc. its really a personal choice as to what you prefer)
  • Sharp Knife, Cheese Grater or food processor (to powder the soap)
  • Measuring Cups
  • Storage Container (empty yogurt container w/ lid, Tupperware type container)
***Also, if you wanted a scented laundry detergent you can add a few drops of essential oils in whatever scent you like...just be sure to stir it into the mixture thoroughly)
All these items can be found in most local chain stores such as Walmart, K-Mart and Target

Recipe:
  • 1 bar of shaved bar soap
  • 1/2 cup of borax
  • 1/2 cup of washing soda
Add all ingredients to a medium small mixing bowl and stir for about 5 minutes, place in storage container and you are good to go!

Regarding High Efficiency (HE) Front-Load Washers

You may have been told you need to use “special soap” for your HE front-load washing machine. Let me enlighten you as to why. HE front-load washers require “special soap” for one reason and one reason alone…low suds; because they use less water, they require soap that is less sudsy. The good news is, the homemade detergent in this recipe is VERY low suds. Just make sure you use the recommended amount of detergent.

The HE designation is just another advertising mechanism the industry is using to try & swindle consumers into buying “special soap” that they charge unnecessarily exorbitant prices for.
